5 Tips for Managing Symptoms of PMS

Cramps, bloating, headache, fatigue. Yep, it’s that time of the month again. You’re about to get your period and feel the dreaded symptoms of PMS.

Most women experience PMS symptoms at some point in their life. Symptoms are often mild for most women, but for some, they are so severe that they interfere with their daily life.

Whether your symptoms are mild or severe, feeling under the weather for several days every month is no fun. Luckily, there are several things you can do to help manage your symptoms. Keep reading to learn our top 5 tips.

1. Regular Exercise

Exercise helps relieve PMS symptoms like fatigue and depression. When you exercise, your brain releases adrenaline and endorphins. This gives you a boost of energy and improves your mood.

It’s essential to exercise routinely, not only when you have symptoms. Regular exercise may help improve other symptoms of PMS, including headache, bloating, and nausea. 

2. Eat a Healthy Diet

Getting the proper nutrition will help ease PMS symptoms. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats. Other nutrients can help include calcium, vitamin B, and vitamin D.

In addition to eating healthy, you should remove a few things from your diet for PMS relief. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, salt, and processed foods. 

3. Get Plenty of Sleep

Getting enough sleep helps combat one of the most common symptoms of PMS – fatigue. It would help if you tried to get more sleep than usual in the days leading up to your period to reduce fatigue. This will help boost your mood and make you feel more relaxed.

4. Reduce Stress

Stress has adverse effects on your body, including making PMS symptoms worse. Self-care is essential when you’re not feeling your best. If you’re feeling irritable or anxious, try relaxation techniques like yoga or breathing exercises. 

Relaxation techniques are also helpful for physical symptoms like menstrual cramps. You can help your muscles relax with a heating pad or a warm bath. Aromatherapy with essential oils like lavender or cinnamon may also help with cramps.

5. Medication and Supplements

If lifestyle changes don’t ease your PMS symptoms, you may consider medication. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen and naproxen can help with cramps. For more severe symptoms, your doctor may prescribe hormonal birth control.

Some women find vitamin supplements helpful for managing symptoms of PMS. Vitamin B6 boosts energy, vitamin D improves mood, and magnesium helps with headaches. The FDA doesn’t regulate these supplements, so it’s best to consult your doctor before taking them.
