Dr. Mia Cowan MD
Founder and Medical Director

Dr. Mia Cowan is Founder and Medical Director of MiBella Wellness Center. A native of Birmingham, AL, Dr. Cowan received both her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Master of Arts degree in Health Education and Promotion from the University of Alabama. She completed her Doctorate of Medicine and residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology from the Medical College of Wisconsin.
During residency, Dr. Cowan won several awards and was appointed Chief Resident of the OB/GYN residency program from 2005-2006. Dr. Cowan is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She received her training as a Bariatric Medicine Specialist from the Center for Medical Weight Loss and has a Master of Business Administration degree from Auburn University.
Dr. Cowan served on the YMCA Shades Valley Board of Directors from 2010-2017 and chaired the Strong Kid’s Campaign in 2011-2012. She also served on the Safehouse Board of Directors from 2013-2016. She has been a member of the American Heart Association Birmingham Multicultural Leadership Committee since 2012. She was a member of the Executive Board for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society from 2014-2016. She has proudly served on the American Heart Association Board since 2015.
She is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, The Birmingham Chapter of the Links Incorporated, The Women’s Network, Jack and Jill of America, and the Mineral District Medical Society. She also leads a couples small group with her husband at her church, Living Stones Temple.
She is married to Joseph Brown, Jr and has a daughter, Marley and a son, Jamil. She enjoys spending time with her family, golfing and traveling.
Awards and Accolades
In 2011, Dr. Cowan was honored as one of the Birmingham Business Journal’s Top 40 Under 40. She was nominated for the “Start-Up Business of the Year” Award by the African American Business Council as well as the Birmingham Business Alliance’s “Emerging Business of the Year” Award.
Dr. Cowan is also featured in Heart & Soul Magazine’s August/September 2011 issue. In 2012, Dr. Cowan was nominated for the Top 12 of 2012 Best in Minority Business Award, presented by Cox Media Group. Additionally, Dr. Cowan was nominated for the Central Alabama Women’s Business Center’s Roses Award, bestowed to women entrepreneurs and professionals who have made a difference sustaining their communities.
In 2013, Dr. Cowan was awarded 2013 Best in Minority Business Awards for outstanding young professionals, presented by Cox Media Group. She was also honored with the Shades Valley YMCA Adult Volunteer Award in April 2013.
In 2014, she was named Who’s Who in Black Alabama Top 20 under 40. This year, Dr. Cowan was honored in the Birmingham Magazine’s inaugural class of Power 50 honorees for making a positive impact in our city.
Santanna Thomas
Nurse Practitioner

Santanna Thomas was born in Saint Louis, MO and moved to Huntsville, AL when she was eight. Santanna obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Tuskegee University and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2011. In 2014 she completed the Accelerated Masters to Nursing Pathway Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. It was during this program that her passion for women’s health manifested. Fall 2015 she started the Dual Adult-Gerontology Primary Care/ Women’s Health Subspecialty Program. In December 2017, she completed her Masters of Science in Nursing at UAB.
Santanna is dually certified as a Women’s Health and Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner. She has always loved mentoring young women and looks forward to impacting change in the lives of the women that she meets. She is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, member of the Rock City Church Choir, American Association of Nurse Practitioners and Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honors Society.
She is married to Kershun Thomas. They both attend the Rock City Church and are highly active in ministry. They both enjoy traveling and spending time with family and friends.
