Dr. Mia Cowan is Founder and Medical Director of MiBella Wellness Center. A native of Birmingham, AL, Dr. Cowan received both her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Master of Arts degree in Health Education and Promotion from the University of Alabama. She completed her Doctorate of Medicine and residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology from the Medical College of Wisconsin. During residency, Dr. Cowan won several awards and was appointed Chief Resident of the OB/GYN residency program from 2005-2006. Dr. Cowan is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She received her training as a Bariatric Medicine Specialist from the Center for Medical Weight Loss and has a Master of Business Administration degree from Auburn University.
Dr. Cowan provides exemplary care to adolescents and women of all ages for their gynecology care. She has special interests in hormonal balance for women and men, holistic medicine and minimally invasive surgery. In addition, she also provides comprehensive weight loss programs in her office. Her goal is to provide superior patient care to promote lifelong health and wellness.
In 2011, Dr. Cowan was honored as one of the Birmingham Business Journal’s Top 40 Under 40. She was nominated for the “Start Up Business of the Year” Award by the African American Business Council as well as the Birmingham Business Alliance’s “Emerging Business of the Year” Award. Dr. Cowan is also featured in Heart & Soul Magazine’s August/September 2011 issue.
In 2012, Dr. Cowan was nominated for the Top 12 of 2012 Best in Minority Business Award, presented by Cox Media Group. Additionally, Dr. Cowan was nominated for the Central Alabama Women’s Business Center’s Roses Award, bestowed to women entrepreneurs and professionals who have made a difference sustaining their communities.
In 2013, Dr. Cowan was awarded the 2013 Best in Minority Business Awards for outstanding young professionals, presented by Cox Media Group. She was also honored with the Shades Valley YMCA Adult Volunteer Award in April 2013. In 2014, she was recently named Who’s Who in Black Alabama Top 20 under 40.
Dr. Cowan serves on the YMCA Shades Valley Board of Directors, and chaired the Strong Kid’s Campaign in 2011-2012. She also serves on the Safehouse Board of Directors and the AHA/ASA Birmingham Multicultural Leadership Committee, as well as the Girlfriend’s Gala Committee for the Literacy Council. She has most recently become a member of the Executive Board for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. She is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, The Birmingham Chapter of the Links Incorporated, The Women’s Network, Jack and Jill of America, and the Mineral District Medical Society. She also serves on the Health Ministry at her church.
She is married to Joseph Brown, Jr and has a 6-year old daughter, Marley and a 22 year old bonus son, Jamil. She enjoys spending time with her family and traveling.
