Hello Ageless Belles! It’s me Dr. Mia. I’m your board-certified gynecologist and B3 SPECIALIST. I help women, my “Ageless Belles” struggling with weight gain, fatigue, and low sex drive improve their B3: beauty, balance, and belief through education and cutting-edge medicine (programs, media, speaking, blogs and books) so they can “live well, age beautifully.”
Are you having pain with intercourse? This can affect a woman’s self-esteem, as well as, cause problems in her relationship! Pain during intercourse is a very common complaint of young and older women and usually, can be easily resolved.
- Pain during intercourse can be caused by vaginal dryness, which can easily be treated with lubrication, and my favorite is…….. ORGANIC COCONUT OIL! If the discomfort continues, see your gynecologist to rule out yeast or other infectious causes.
- Pain during intercourse can also be caused by vaginal atrophy, or thinning of the vaginal tissue, secondary to lack of estrogen. This usually occurs in peri-menopausal and postmenopausal women. Vaginal estrogen cream twice a week usually resolves the issue, especially if used along with organic coconut oil during intercourse. There is also a daily pill that can be prescribed for postmenopausal women who don’t like to deal with vaginal cream. You must make your gynecologist aware of the issue, and she will decide if you are a good candidate for vaginal estrogen or the daily pill.
- Sometimes the discomfort occurs during intercourse with deep penetration, but many times can be relieved by changing positions. Pain with intercourse is a problem if it’s significant enough that it affects orgasm and/or decreases the desire to have sex because of fear of pain. If you have already tried several different positions, as well as lubrication and continue to have pain, discuss this with your gynecologist, so that a thorough work-up can be done. Fibroids, ovarian cysts, scar tissue, endometriosis and/or an enlarged uterus, to name a few, can also cause pain with intercourse.
